What is Internet Protocol Version 6 – IPV6

Internet Protocol Version 6 comes as the successor of IPV4 which will enable upto 2¹²⁸ IP addresses. Currently the internet works on the IP version 4 and it enables 2³² addresses. Now IPV4 is unable to fulfill the demand for IP addresses. At the time of designing IPv4 address space, no one has imagined that it will get exhausted. So the introduction of IPv6 is inevitable. IPv6 was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Introduction of IPv6 allows more number of users and devices on internet. This also eliminates the need for network address translation. Networks and hosts will have to deploy this protocol in order to take advantage of this. Almost all modern OS is using dual protocol for the transport of packets. For the purpose of promoting IPV6 an event was sponsored and organized by the Internet Society and several large content providers on June 08 2011. The anchoring companies were Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Akamai Technologies, and Limelight Networks.

IPv6 representation is using 128 bits. Each 16 bit is converted in hexadecimal format and separated with colons. As it is easier to convert hexadecimal number to binary than decimal to binary, hexadecimal is used for each addressing.
Ex: 2001:0000:4137:9E76:24D4:10C2:8553:E7AE.
It is simplified by suppressing the leading zeros in each block. But there should be at least 1 digit in those 16 bit block.
Ex: 2001:0:4137:9E76:24D4:10C2:8553:E7AE
Following numbers are the Decimal -> hexadecimal representations. 0 -> 0; 1 -> 1; 2 -> 2; 3 -> 3; 4 -> 4; 5 -> 5; 6 -> 6; 7 -> 7; 8 -> 8; 9 -> 9; 10 -> A; 11 -> B; 12 -> C; 13 -> D; 14 -> E; 15 -> F.

IPv4 uses dotted representation for subnet mask, but subnet mask is not supported by IPv6. It supports the prefix length notation instead.

There are 3 types of IPv6 addresses: Unicast, Multicast and Anycast.
Unicast addresses identifies only a single interface within the scope of the type of address. The address scope is the region of the IPv6 network over which the address is unique. A multicast address identifies zero or more destinations. The packets addressed to a multicast address will be delivered to all destinations identified by the address. Anycast address identifies multiple destinations. It is actually designed for one-to-one of many addresses, so it delivers only to a single destination. The packets will reach the nearest interface identified by the routing table.
