[What is] Difference between Bounce Rate and % Exit (Exit Rate)

If you are using any analytic tool for your website traffic analysis (like Google Analytics) then you must have come across with these two terms. 1) Bounce Rate and 2) % Exit. And you must have been confused with these two terms so I am just trying to give explanation of these terms here.

Bounce Rate : When visitors enter the site or specifically website page and leave the site without visiting of any other pages of website then its called visitor has bounced back.

Example :

If 50 visitors comes to website’s Sports category and 30 visitors exists website without visiting any other webpage and 20 visitors visits other page of site then it calls Sports category has 60% bounce rate.

Same way, if 50 visitors comes to website’s Entertainment category and 25 visitors exists website without visiting any other webpage and 25 visitors visits other page of site then it calls sports category has 50% bounce rate.

Collectively, these two categories gets 55% bounce rate.

High Bounce rate of page says below things about page:

1) Less quality contents

2) Contents are not presented very well

3) Error in any section

4) Page doesn’t refer any other interesting page of website.

%Exit (Exit Rate) : Exit Rate is percentage of visitors who exit website from specific page to other website but (in different to bounce rate) visitor may have visited any other pages of website from which he just exited.

For ex. If visitor visits your website’s page A then page B then page C and then he exits your website from page C then it means visitor has exit from page C.

High Exit rate of page says below things about page:

1) Less quality contents or less interested page then previously visited pages

2) Contents are not presented very well in page then previous pages

3) Error in any section or page then previous pages

4) Page doesn’t refer any other interesting page of website.

5) Page may link to other more interesting website

6) Page may take more time to load then previous pages of website which visitor has visited.

Example with bounce rate and Exit Rate:

Suppose, 30 visitors have landed to page A of your website (from search engine or advertisement) and 10 visitors have left website without visiting any other pages of website and remaining 20 visitors visit other pages of websites.

And suppose 30 visitors comes to page A from other pages of your website (say page B, page C,….) and among 30, 18 visitors exits from page A and 12 visitors visits other pages of site then here are Bounce Rate and Exit Rate for page A of your Website…

Bounce Rate =  10 /30 % = 33%

Exit Rate = (10 + 18)/(30 + 30) %= 28/60 %= 46.66%

I hope this articles may give you enough understanding to understand difference between Bounce Rate and %Exit (Exit Rate). Please write your comments or questions here. I will try to reply your comments asap.
